TESTING REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Promotion tests are held throughout the year. Instructors determine which students are eligible and will notify them in advance. A student is eligible to test when the following criteria are met:

  • Training requirement — The student has attended the minimum required number of classes for the necessary session(s).

  • Pattern proficiency — The student has mastered the pattern designated for their rank.

  • Technique proficiency — The student has demonstrated all required techniques for their rank, including kicks, hand techniques, self‑defense, model sparring, and other skills.

  • Attitude and tenets — The student consistently shows a positive attitude and lives according to the tenets of TaeKwon‑Do.

  • School performance for youth — Youth students must maintain a positive attitude in school, keep up with assignments, and have permission from their parent(s)/guardian(s) and teacher(s) to test. A copy of the student’s report card is required.

  • Leadership for senior ranks — Senior‑rank students (Blue Belt and above) must demonstrate leadership, serve as role models for lower ranks, assist instructors, show willingness to help others, and represent the Midwest Academy of TaeKwon‑Do appropriately.

  • Uniform requirement — A proper uniform is required for testing. Students needing to order or replace a uniform should speak with their instructor.

  • Test fee — A test fee is required. Fees are kept low and used for supplies such as certificates, belts, belt tape, and printing materials.

WRITTEN TEST

​A written test is required for students at Green Belt and higher. Tests are administered two weeks prior to promotion testing.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS

To advance in rank, all students must meet minimum training hours. In general, students should train two days per week for a 12‑week period to be eligible for their next Gup rank test.

  • Students training only once per week will have a longer interval between tests.

  • If classes are missed due to illness, vacation, or other reasons, students are encouraged to make up the time on another training night or at one of our other schools
    (no additional cost).

  • Students must sign the attendance sheet at every class they attend.

BELT PROMOTION TESTS

All promotion tests are held at The Centre of Elgin – Elgin, IL.

 

Tests are typically scheduled for Saturday afternoons and occur quarterly.

 

Make‑up tests are offered only at Grand Master Valin’s discretion.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • A cumulative passing grade in school

  • Appropriate behavior inside and outside of class

    • Misconduct, fighting, or other unacceptable behavior may affect testing status

  • Final approval from Grand Master Valin

**IMPORTANT NOTE**

Testing requirements may be adjusted based on age, injuries, or other health considerations.
