PHILOSOPHY OF TAEKWON-DO

The ultimate purpose of TaeKwon‑Do is to eliminate fighting by preventing the oppression of the weak by the strong. Its power must always be grounded in humanity, justice, morality, wisdom, and faith. Through these principles, TaeKwon‑Do aims to help build a better and more peaceful world.

TaeKwon‑Do teaches that anyone can develop the strength and character needed to become a guardian of justice, to confront social challenges, and to cultivate the human spirit to its highest potential. With dedication and discipline, these goals are within reach for every practitioner.

The philosophy of TaeKwon‑Do is rooted in ethical and moral standards that allow people to live together in peace and harmony. We are called to support one another and work collectively to build safe, strong, and thriving communities. In a world where violence and senseless destruction occur far too often, TaeKwon‑Do provides the skills, values, and confidence needed to become leaders and positive role models—individuals capable of inspiring meaningful change.

General Choi Hong‑Hi established the following guidelines.

The instructors of the Midwest Academy of TaeKwon‑Do uphold these principles and encourage all students to do the same.

Guidelines for All Practitioners

  1. Never use TaeKwon‑Do for commercial, financial, or political gain.

  2. Be willing to face difficulty and do what is worthwhile, even when it is challenging.

  3. Be gentle to the weak and firm with those who misuse strength.

  4. Be content with your possessions but never with your skills or personal development.

  5. Always finish what you begin, whether the task is large or small.

  6. Teach willingly, offering guidance to anyone regardless of religion, race, or ideology.

  7. Never yield to repression or threats when pursuing a noble cause.

  8. Teach through action rather than words alone.

  9. Remain true to yourself even when circumstances change.

  10. Be an eternal teacher—teaching with your body when young, with your words when older, and through your moral example long after you are gone.
