OUR PROGRAM

Our community-based Taekwon-Do program welcomes both children and adults to experience the transformative benefits of martial arts. More than just kicks and punches, Taekwon-Do builds self-confidence, strengthens self-esteem, and teaches individuals how to face challenges with resilience and grace. It’s a path to physical fitness, mental clarity, and practical self-defense—all in a supportive, respectful environment.
Taekwon-Do, meaning “the art of hand and foot,” is rooted in discipline and personal growth. Students learn to set meaningful goals, work toward higher ranks, and develop a strong sense of self-worth—an essential foundation for staying safe and thriving in today’s world. We teach that Taekwon-Do is for self-defense only—no exceptions.

Our program is built on the five core tenets: Courtesy, Integrity, Self-Control, Perseverance, and Indomitable Spirit. These values guide students both inside and outside the Do-Jang, shaping confident, respectful individuals who uplift those around them.
While some may go on to compete, our true goal is to nurture character. We focus on building respectful, empowered students who believe in themselves and contribute positively to their families, schools, and communities.
OUR HISTORY
The Midwest Academy of TaeKwon‑Do was founded in 1996 by five dedicated martial artists who shared a deep passion for Taekwon‑Do and a desire to bring its values to their community. Their vision was to create a school rooted in tradition, excellence, and personal development—an academy where students of all ages could grow in confidence, discipline, and skill.
At the forefront of this vision is Grandmaster Dan Valin - training since 1978 and holding the prestigious rank of 9th Degree Black Belt, Grandmaster Valin serves as Chief Instructor and oversees Academy locations in Elgin, Buffalo Grove, and Lake Zurich, along with affiliated schools throughout the Midwest under the Midwest Martial Arts League. His extensive certifications, national titles, and decades of teaching experience have shaped our high standards and strong reputation. Beyond Taekwon‑Do, he brings additional expertise in Jujutsu (Jiu-Jitsu), Hapkido, and self‑defense, and remains deeply involved in organizing and officiating tournaments nationwide.
Our growth and success are also supported by its accomplished senior instructors:
Master Scott Kuhfeldt (7th Degree Black Belt) – A dedicated martial artist since 1984, Master Kuhfeldt has been teaching since 1992 and plays a vital role in our training programs. With broad certification and experience as both competitor and official, he contributes significantly to the demonstration team, self‑defense instruction, and program development. He currently serves as our Training Director.

Master Jemal Crisp (7th Degree Black Belt) – Certified through multiple organizations, Master Crisp is an active leader within our competition and demonstration teams. His background includes extensive training in Filipino Martial Arts, Jujutsu (Jiu-Jitsu) and other martial arts, and he officiates at tournaments across the country. He also serves as the Membership Director.
Mrs. Linda Singer (6th Degree Black Belt) – Training since 1979, Mrs. Singer brings decades of experience and a passion for teaching. Her classes emphasize respect, enjoyment, and personal growth, helping students reach their full potential. In addition to her martial arts accomplishments, she has performed professionally as a dancer with the Miami Heat and the Chicago Bulls senior dance team.
Together, these leaders have built the Midwest Academy of TaeKwon‑Do into a respected institution known for its traditional values, high‑quality instruction, and commitment to empowering students of all ages. Their shared dedication continues to shape a strong, vibrant martial arts community throughout the Midwest.
